Appraiser Position




SALARY: $22-26 per hour (range based on experience)


•Working toward or has obtained a Michigan Certified Assessing Officer (Level 2) or Michigan Advanced Assessing Officer (Level 3)

•Michigan Personal Property Examiner Certificate is Preferred but not Mandatory

•High School Graduate (Post-Secondary Degree Helpful)

•Knowledge of Appraisal Standards and Ethics

•Knowledge of Computer Software (BS&A, Apex Sketching, MS Office)

•Ability to Read Construction Blueprints

•Ability to Read all Types of Legal Descriptions

•Knowledge and Ability to do Field Appraisals

•Communication skills to assist with customer service

•Knowledge of State Tax Commission Property Costing Guidelines/Procedures

•Knowledge of Michigan Law pertaining to Homestead/Farmland Exemptions and the creation of assessed and taxable values

•Knowledge of what constitutes “a transfer of ownership” for the purpose of uncapping taxable value on properties. Familiarity with Quit Claim Deeds, Warranty Deeds, Land Contracts, etc.

•Knowledge of the State rules and regulations pertaining to Land Splits

•Knowledge of the Board of Review Assessment Appeal Process

•Knowledge of how properties should be classified based on use

Duties/Responsibilities of the Assessing Department:

•Assist the Assessor in preparing the annual Assessment Roll

•Calculate “true cash values” of all types of properties using BS&A Software

•Determine market value of properties based on sales studies & legal guidelines

•Process Principal Residence Exemption Affidavits

•Issue Principal Residence denials and rescinds.

•Process Name and Address changes for the Township

•Assist with customer service for walk-ins

•Input legal descriptions, building specifications, sales information, Apex sketches, and property classifications into BS&A database

•Compose letters and other correspondence

•Operate basic office machines: copier, fax, etc.

•Keep records of Michigan Tax Tribunal, State Tax Commission, BOR judgements etc.

•Take minutes at BOR hearings, Schedule BOR appointments, and Process BOR appeals

•Update tax maps i.e. landsplits, combinations, new developments, etc.

•Assist assessor with appraisals for value dispute cases

•Process Land Divisions

•Conduct visual inspections of properties to gather information for updating Assessment Record cards

•Temporarily fill in as Assessor in the absence of the Assessor
